
In 2011, while traveling through Mali, he was kidnapped by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and held hostage in the Sahara for nearly six years. Cut off from the modern world and enduring extreme isolation, McGown survived through mental strength, adaptability, and an unwavering will to live. He was released in 2017, returning home to South Africa after a captivity that tested the limits of human endurance.
